Notes for Matthew Wood PENTECOST

In a letter written to his uncle in 1857, Matthew expressed a desire to
become a surveyor and go out west. It is not known whether or not he
ever made the move, but if so, his career was cut short by the outbreak
of hostilities.
In December of 1862, Matthew was promoted to 2nd Sergeant and detailed
to obtain clothing for his company; in August of 1864, he was reported as
entitled to bounty payment. This is the last entry in his Official
Service Record and may mean that he was invalided out of service at this
time. On April 24, 1915, an inquiry was sent to the Commissioner of
Pensions of the State of Georgia by the Adjutant General during an
attempt at clarification of the records of Confederate Veterans. There
is no record that a pension was ever paid to Matthew or his wife and the
time of death and place of burial is not known either.

In the 1860 census Matthew is listed as Pentycost, living with his
brother Joseph.
