here's an earlier record: Buxted FILE - Grant - ref. SAS/PN/24 - date: 4 May 1625 [from Scope and Content] By JOHN PENTICOST of Laughton, yeoman, to JOHN RABIE of Newicke, yeoman, - for £60 - of land called Hookebeech containing 7 ac. in Buxsted, lying to lands late of John Atwells E., John Petit late Sleaches, N., a lane from the house of John Petit to Buxsted church, N. and W. and lands of John Kilnor late Collins called Hookebeech, S. Signature and seal The Penticosts seem to have existed in East Sussex and migrated slowly to West Sussex over the years, latterly in Brighton, Lewes, Horsham, Haywards Heath. You can access records by request from http://www.eastsussexcc.gov.uk/leisureandtourism/localandfamilyhistory/useourarchives/ The 1901 UK census shows penticosts flourishing in Sussex in Angmering, Cuckfield and Lindfield as general labourers. Anecdotally, I do know several were transported, and one ran a bawdy house. |
